Tips for staying cool and safe during your summer workout

(excerpts from article by Terri Coles Tue Jul 12 2011, Chatelaine Magazine)

Yesterday was the last day of our summer Zumba classes in Anola and Dugald. Thanks to all the hardcore chicks who came out to dance and sweat it out during June and July. I wish you sunshine and happy times for the rest of our short summer and look forward to jamming with you all in the fall (classes start mid-September).

Now that you’ll likely be taking your exercise outdoors for yardwork, gardening or a bracing game of croquet, you may appreciate some tips about how to stay cool and safe when your working out in the out of doors. Outdoor exercise is a great way to get fit in the few warm summer months that we have out here in the prairies. But while taking your routine outside of the gym can be refreshing  there are also safety considerations around the UV index, heat and humidity. Here are some tips from nutritional specialist and personal trainer,  Nadeen Bowman (of The Last Ten Pounds Bootcamp), for how to get a great workout in the fresh air.

1. Make sure you’re drinking enough water — down a litre of liquid for every hour of outdoor exercise. “You should be sipping water every twenty minutes.”

2. Fuel your body before and after working out. Eat within an hour of exercising, consuming something light so you’ve got some energy to burn. And within 30 to 60 minutes of finishing your workout, take in some complex carbs because you’ve depleted your glycogen stores. Fruit or veggies are a good, healthy choice.

3. When you can, avoid working out when the sun is at its peak. Sunshine is generally the strongest from 2pm to 4pm, so try to get your outdoor exercise in in the morning or evening, and stay in the shade if you can. And don’t forget your sunscreen!

4. Avoid dietary ups and downs. Don’t skip meals or eat too much in one sitting, and don’t crash diet. “In order to lose weight, we have to eat consistently.” Yo-yo dieting may work short-term but backfires in the end, and you could gain back more than you lost. It also can lead to inconsistent energy, which affects your ability to get a good workout when you’re fighting against the heat.

I’m Jammin’ — I hope you liked jammin’ too!

Cindy Thoroski and Zumba Jammer Carlos Henriquez

Me and Zumba Jammer, Carlos Henriquez, just before the jam session at Shapes on Pembina. I had to get this photo taken before I was too gross and sweaty looking after 3 hours of Zumba -- amazingly, Carlos looked just as awesome AFTER the session 🙂

I can’t believe how the last 8 weeks have flown by since I started Zumba with my crew at Anola Over 50 Club. It’s been both humbling and exhilirating to share my debut as a teacher with the wonderful women in my community.  A total dream come true!

Thank you ALL so much for coming out and sharing in the Zumba love with me. It’s been a blast sharing in the music and getting to know everyone. I’m looking forward to sharing a couple of extra weeks with you all before we head out for a well-deserved summer of gardening, vacationing and  fun times in the sun with our friends and family.

This past weekend was a special treat for me. Local Zumba diva, Tania Woodfield, arranged for both a Master Class and a Zumba Jam Session with Zumba Jammer, Carlos Henriquez from Toronto.  I attended the Master Class with my buddy Allie DePaulo (awesome Zumba instructor-to-be in just a few short weeks) and jammed out at Shapes on Pembina with a crowd of very enthusiastic ZIN (Zumba Instructor Network) for three hours on Saturday. I can’t think of a better way to spend my weekend :)

It was so much fun and we also learned so much from the lovely and talented Carlos, his inspired choreography and his wealth of experience as a teacher and ballet dancer — and plus also, we dined out by proxy on his story of meeting Twitch on the plane ride over– too cool!

I am totally re-energized and pumped to bring back some new songs to Zumba Anola before the end of our spring/summer session! Can’t wait!

Zumba Love,

Cindy

And there was much rejoicing….
